Rydges Wellington – A Landmark First for Wellington

High Rise, Hotels

Architecture Award Winner 2007 and later Best Leading Hotel NZ at the 2015 World Travel Awards.

In 2007, Rydges Wellington—originally the Holiday Inn—became Wellington’s first purpose-built, international star-rated hotel in over 20 years. Positioned between Parliament and the waterfront, it addressed a real need for modern mid-market accommodation in the CBD

Elegant Design & Context-Aware Architecture

Studio Pacific & Peddle Thorp collaborated with McKenna to create a 17-storey structure that marries form and function. A striking podium supports a slender tower, topped with sawtooth setbacks that capture sweeping views towards both the sea and Parliament.

Vertical precast concrete fins enhance privacy, shade the interiors, and add a modernist texture to the facade. Large glazed areas ensure that each of the 280 rooms is filled with sunlight and offers memorable vistas.

Public & Guest Spaces with Premium Appeal

The ground floor sets the tone with a stylish lobby, contemporary dining, a bar area, and an illuminated central bar flanked by elegant light-chain curtains.

Wellness and business amenities include an indoor pool, spa, gym, sauna, and conference suites—all thoughtfully designed to create a comprehensive guest experience.

Iconic Skyline Presence

The building’s silhouette, defined by its over-sailing roof and slender tower, remains a recognisable element in Wellington’s skyline—a testament to McKenna’s vision to design buildings that engage with, and enhance, the city context.

Award-Winning Excellence in Hospitality

In 2007, the project won the NZIA Wellington Architecture Award for Hospitality and Tourism, affirming its architectural and functional success.

Later, under the Rydges brand, the hotel was named the Best Leading Hotel in New Zealand at the 2015 World Travel Awards—what some call the “Oscars of the travel industry”—highlighting its sustained operational excellence.

Rydges Wellington is one of four standout hotels in McKenna’s award-winning collection, alongside the Sofitel Lighter Quay, The Sebel, and The Quadrant in Auckland. These developments exemplify a visionary approach to hospitality, balancing architectural integrity with long-term value.
